Happy 89th Birthday to General Charles Yeager, hero to all who love the airplane.

Another one from Scaled Composites - Rutan’s Model 151 ARES (Agile Responsive Effective Support) was developed in the 1990’s as a response to a US Army need for a cheap ground attack aircraft.

Scaled Composites Model 281 Proteus - designed by Burt Rutan for a high-altitude long endurance aircraft with a ceiling over 60, 000 feet, with the option for two pilots, or none at all (it could also be remote controlled or fly autonomously).

Boeing 747 Dreamlifter, designed by Boeing to ferry parts of the new 787 Dreamliner from around the world, much like the Airbus Beluga.

Boeing X-32 contender in the battle to be the Joint Strike Fighter, losing out to the Lockheed Martin X-35, which became the F-35 Lightning II. A capable aircraft, which unfortunately looks like a hippopotamus from the air intake for V/STOL flight.

Northrop - McDonnell Douglas YF-23 competitor to the Lockheed Martin YF-22 in the USAF Advanced Tactical Fighter program in the early 1990s. Two were built: the Grey Ghost and the Black Widow II.

The F-16XL, a cranked-arrow delta wing version of the classic General Dynamics F-16. Lost out in USAF competition to the F-15E, and donated to NASA for testing.

Avro Canada VZ-9 Avrocar - the Canadian Cold War vertical-takeoff flying saucer designed and prototyped in the late 1950’s for the USAF and US Army.

American unmanned supersonic reconnaissance drone, the Lockheed D-21 (with Mothership, the M-21 variant of the A-12). Flew sorties over the People’s Republic of China. Later mated with the B-52.
